Tasting with Dani: Let’s Get Green

Let’s Get Green.
Recycling is a great thing to do but an even better thing to do with those old wine bottles is to ‘up-cycle’ them. Now I am not a big collector of things but, I will tell you, often after a dinner party or get together there is an aray of wine bottles left around. Some are so beautiful you don’t really want to throw them away, but we’re not in college any more here kids and lining our shelves with empty old liquor and wine bottles is a thing of the past. However, there are a bunch of great ways you can up-cycle your favorite wine bottles into a unique piece of art or useful decoration. See some of my favorite re-uses for old wine bottles below and hopefully you will be as inspired as I was! (more…)

Tasting with Dani: A Taste of Texas

Things are heating up…and the grapes are loving it.

It has been incredibly hot in Texas. Although the inhabitants of the state may not appreciate this heat wave, especially the farmers, it is causing a more positive stir with local vineyards and wineries.

This historic Texas drought is affecting everyone from ranchers to farmers. For many, the losses are catastrophic. However, the dry weather is helping the state’s wineries reap the fruit of their labor with an uncommonly delicious crop” www.KVUE.com

Many agriculture products have lost their crops all together while the grape harvest seems to be thriving. This is a blessing for Texas grape growers, although the crop quantity is smaller, the heat and reduction of water in the soil is yielding a more flavorful grape. Keep in mind that Texas is having a record drought this summer. (more…)

Tasting with Dani: The SIP Classic 2011

SIP was overwhelming as far as wine festivals go. the SIP Classic had so many vendors representing the local vineyards, wineries and food of the area that one really needs the entire 3 days the festival runs to catch it all.

Tasting with Dani: Portland Seafood and Wine Festival

This was my first venture to the Portland Seafood and Wine Festival. Now I have been to many wine festivals, and to be honest I went to this one just for the wine. I am not a seafood person. If it’s fried, well that’s another story. However, for those who are in the mood for seafood as much as wine you would have found yourself disappointed. Calling this the SEAFOOD and WINE Festival was a bit misleading as there were only 6 restaurants represented at the festival among the 50 wineries and vineyards.

Given that Portland has a big pull for wine and seafood lovers alike, this created what can only be described as a red hot mess. Lines for food were exceeding the capacity the restaurants were able to handle and in fact one of our friends had to wait over an hour and a half for his food order. Thank goodness I’m not really into seafood and that I ate lunch before I came.
